Registered Youth Apprenticeships

What is RYA?

The Registered Youth Apprenticeship (RYA) program is a structured, earn-and-learn career pathway that connects high school students with employers in high-demand industries. The program integrates rigorous classroom instruction with paid, on-the-job training, allowing students to gain industry-recognized credentials, college credit, and real-world experience while still in high school.

Registered Youth Apprenticeship (RYA)

    • Career Jumpstart & Experience: Apprenticeships give students a head start on their careers by providing valuable, real-world work experience and exposure to an industry. This experience can help them decide on a career path and make them more competitive in the job market after graduation.
    • Paid Learning: Students earn a wage while they learn, which helps them gain financial independence and can reduce the need for student loans. This "earn while you learn" model makes post-secondary education and training more accessible and affordable.
    • Valuable Skills & Mentorship: Students develop a mix of technical and soft skills, such as problem-solving and communication, that are essential for career success. They also receive guidance and mentorship from experienced professionals, which helps them grow both personally and professionally.
    • Industry-Recognized Credentials: Upon completion, students often earn an industry-recognized credential or certification and may also receive college credit. These credentials demonstrate their skills and can be used for future employment or continuing education.
    • Access to a Talent Pipeline: Youth apprenticeships create a sustainable pipeline of skilled and motivated future employees. Employers can train apprentices to meet their specific business needs, ensuring a supply of qualified workers who are already familiar with the company's culture and operations.
    • Increased Productivity & Retention: Apprentices are often eager to learn and contribute to the company. Training them from a young age can lead to higher employee retention rates and lower hiring costs in the long run. Additionally, the investment in their training often results in a positive return on investment.
    • Fresh Perspectives: Youth apprentices bring new energy, tech-savvy skills, and innovative ideas to the workplace, which can boost morale and help a business stay competitive.
    • Community & Employee Engagement: By participating in a youth apprenticeship program, businesses strengthen their ties to the local community and school systems. The program also provides opportunities for current employees to develop their leadership and mentorship skills.
