Dual Credit

Students can earn college credit by taking advanced high school courses and dually enrolling in the college’s reciprocal course.  Under the guidelines from the Coordinating Board for Higher Education (CBHE), the following requirements must be met:

Juniors and Seniors

  • Juniors and seniors with an overall minimum grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) are automatically eligible for dual credit classes.
  • Juniors and seniors with an overall grade point average between 2.5-2.99 (on a 4.0 scale) must provide a signed letter of recommendation from their principal or school counselor and provide written permission from a parent or legal guardian.

Freshmen and Sophomores

  • Freshmen and Sophomores must have an overall minimum grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale).
  • Freshmen and Sophomores must provide a signed letter of recommendation from their principal and school counselor.
  • Freshmen and Sophomores must provide written permission from a parent or legal guardian.
  • Freshmen must score at the 90th percentile or above on the ACT or SAT.

In addition to meeting the requirements outlined by the Coordinating Board for Higher Education (CBHE), all admission and prerequisite criteria outlined by the higher education institution must be met as well for course enrollment. These criteria are set by each individual higher education institution, not by Lincoln County R-III, and may change at the discretion of the institution.

Dual credit programming may not be taken with a higher education institution without payment. All payments must be paid in full by the deadline to receive college credit. All questions and payments for dual credit must go through the higher education institution where credit is being earned and will not be managed by TBHS.

Actual courses available for college credit change annually based upon approval of courses by the higher education institution, student enrollment, and teacher certification requirements.

Parents and students are advised that a college may not accept college credit earned through any of the programs. It is the student’s/parents’ responsibility to check with the college that they are planning on attending to see if the college will accept college credit obtained through these advanced credit programs.

CORE 42: The core transfer curriculum, known as CORE 42, is a framework for general education that all Missouri public two-and four-year institutions of higher education have adopted. The goal of the CORE 42 is to facilitate the seamless transfer of academic credits. The completion of the CORE 42 at any public institution of higher education will transfer to every other public institution of higher education in the state and substitute for the receiving institution’s general education requirement. Individual courses that comprise the CORE 42 are guaranteed to transfer one-to-one among all public (and participating independent) colleges and universities in Missouri.

After graduation, transcripts will need to be requested from any dual credit institution in which the student was enrolled in order for the college credit to be transferred.

* Dual enrollment students are expected to follow the programming set forth by the college/university/higher education institution. This includes, but is not limited to, tuition costs, changes in course offerings, and other policies.

  • TBHS students have the opportunity to obtain college credit through the Early College Program at Lindenwood University. The classes are dual enrollment classes, meaning they count as both high school credit and college credit. Final grades are binding and will be permanently included in a student’s college grade point average. These courses are taught at Troy Buchanan High School or at the Wentzville Rec Center.

Requirements to be eligible for dual enrollment

    •  Juniors and Seniors with an overall minimum grade point average of 3.0
      • Juniors and Seniors who have between a 2.5-2.99 overall minimum grade point average may also be approved to enroll with signed letters of recommendation from the high school’s counselor or principal and the student’s parent/guardian.
    • Sophomores must have an overall minimum grade point average of 3.0 and signed letters of recommendation from the high school’s counselor, principal, and student’s parent/legal guardian.

  • Troy Buchanan High School JUNIORS and SENIORS may participate in a dual enrollment program with Ranken Technical College.  This program will enable students to earn college credits for an associate's degree in a variety of technical fields while simultaneously completing high school graduation requirements.  This program is designed to be a 2 (or 3) year program with the first year (and potentially second year) being at no cost to the student.  In order to start the program as a Junior, students must work with their counselor to ensure they have a plan to meet all other graduation requirements.  Working on graduation requirements during their freshman and sophomore year will help students immensely if they wish to attend Ranken as a Junior.

Students in the dual enrollment program will attend classes at the Ranken West campus in Lincoln County or the Ranken Wentzville location depending on the program the student is enrolled in.  The student will spend most or all of their day at Ranken’s campus completing coursework for their chosen program.  Students may attend TBHS to complete any additional graduation requirements or chosen coursework.  Raken course times will be dictated by Ranken’s course schedule, and this coursework will take up a significant amount of schedule time- this could impact additional elective options at TBHS.

This is not an exploratory program.  Students will be enrolled in college coursework with other college students on Ranken’s campus.  The program is targeted at students who wish to complete a certification program at Ranken upon graduation.  The ideal candidate is recommended to have a 2.5 cumulative GPA.

Requirements to be eligible for dual enrollment:

    • Be on track for graduation
      • Students who are not on track to graduate must provide a letter of recommendation from a high school counselor or administrator and have a plan to get back on track (ie: summer school)
    • Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
      • Tuition and Fees for the first year of the program will be covered through a combination of institutional funding from Ranken, public funding from the state, and Federal Pell Grant funding.  In order to secure Pell Grant funding students must complete a FAFSA.

    Dual Enrollment Registration Process

Attending an Open House with a parent/guardian as well as a day of shadowing is required before applying for Ranken.  If you are interested in discussing your eligibility and signing up, talk to your school counselor and they can help you get started.
